Is it as good as Mac/Apple, only more affordable? Does it need a security like windows, or it doesn't like Apple? Is it a part of microsoft, or is it on it's own like Macintosh? I'm just curious about it b/c I've been hearing a lot about it lately.
What is the Linux computer?computer protection
Linux is the name of the kernel (the special program that handles all of the inner workings of the operating system) and so computers are usually called "Linux computers" if they run some operating system that utilizes Linux.
The major thing that makes computers running Linux different from those that run Windows or MacOS is that it is free for anyone to use and modify (for example, if you find something that you don't like so much about a Windows computer you are forced to keep using it until Microsoft decides to change it, but on a Linux computer you or others can change the things you don't like and share them with others so they can benefit from your changes as well).
You will hear people talk about "distributions" when talking about Linux. Distributions are just versions of Linux that people have mixed with their favorite features and looks.
Linux is actually a lot like MacOS X because they both are what are known as POSIX compliant (this just means that most programs that run on Linux computers can run on Macs but not necessarily the other way around). Because of this, it does not require as much virus and spyware protection as Windows because most crackers do not target either Mac or Linux.
