Why is my Windows (XP) Security Center telling me it is unavailable or needs to be restarted?

It told me to restart the computer. I have several times. Also my firewall shut itself off and I did not do that.

Let me get the question clear, when you go to th security center does it show the status of virus protection, Automatic Updates or Windows Firewall? Does it tell you to restart security center?

Try this select run%26gt;%26gt;type services.msc%26gt;%26gt;Scroll down and point to security center if its off click Start the service. Hope that helps.
