Don't scan disk,defrag, no anti-virus, security updates,and other maintenances
How long would a computer last ,if there was no maintenance was done to it ?bmw
It depends on the level of skill of the user.
On my personal PCs, which I know others won't be touching, I:
- don't run scandisk except after unexpected shut down properly)
- don't defrag, or at most, yearly; the marginal performance increase just isn't worth the effort
- don't run anti-virus; my brain (education) is the most effective anti-virus, plus I run as "user", not "administrator"; I only use administrative rights to install/uninstall etc, I guess you might not count this as maintenance
- I *do* allow Windows update, because existing security holes should be fixed
If I knew someone else was going to use my PC, however, I would probably configure more "insulation".
An unmaintained computer should run for years and years with no problems, even running Windows, as long as you:
1) never run/install untrusted apps
2) never mess with the registry unless you KNOW what you're doing
3) never delete things arbitrarily
It's actually super-easy to avoid viruses, etc... education in the key (and it's not hard to learn some basics).
