Trend micro has the highest rated security suite software but Bit Defender is also rated good and includes a backup program.

Will that type of backup program allow me to create a bootable cd with a copy of my current hard drive or just files?

If just files what is a low cost good backup software that is easy to use and will create what I described above?

As for antivirus, the list is endless although today, you really ought to be worrying abouy an antispyware which is the most important protection you can get for your computer today. For that, I recommend Webroot antiavirus with antispyware and firewall. It is pretty reasonable, has good customer support, and is a very good scanner and great for protection. As for backup- although it is a little pricey, I would definetely recommend norton ghost. You can create a bootable backup of your computer with the os, all of your programs etc. and you will be ready to go. Also, their technical support is great and Norton Ghost doesnt take up too much space on your hardrive. I think you have to many programs running all at once so you need to go to your start menue and select run type in masconfig...now start unchecking all those needless programs that are running at the same time slowing your computer down. Rember your not getting rid of the programs because you can allways go to your start menue and bring any program up that you need. I will list a few outer things you can do to speed your computer up,

When your computer freezes it is because the memory in your computer chip is too busy.

Often trying to do too many things at once will confues the computer and rather than make a choice,it will freeze. If you click the mouse constantly you are constantly sending commands to do something. That will do it too.

Freezing also can indicate a software conflict. have you installed any new software recently?

Uninstall it and see if that stops the freezing. if it does, then read the .txt file in the root directory on the install disk and see if you have a program already on your computer that conflicts with the new one.
Sounds to me like your having overheating problems. Try opening up your pc and blowing out all the dirt with a vacuum or one of those air in a can things. If this is a labtop then make sure there enough space for the computer to breath when you are using it..

Well, I think antivirus programms for linux do not exist, but I'm not very sure. As in all operating systems there are some security issues but ubuntu is pretty secure! One thing that you could do to protect your computer is to have all it's programms updated.

You don't need an antivirus in Linux, just don't run your pc as root - in Ubuntu it's even secure, root is accesible only thru a password protected command.

Your file associations have become corrupted. You can use system restore to bring back an earlier version that hasn't been changed. If that fails then you can reinstall your operating system and keep your documents etc safe. Choose repair option. Good luck!
Does your windows 2000 have a restore? Go to start, then control panel, and then system. Restore should be top left on the screen.. Take the system back before the date your friend messed it up.. Earl

As Rowdy said, the file type associations in your comp are wrecked... but before you go for the drastic option of a Restore or even a Reinstall... try this go to folder options from the control panel, in that there's file types, click on that, click on the file type that's troubling you and then click on restore, may be it helps.
Some advice get rid of the stupid friend and reboot in safe mode and change it there.

On my Toshiba laptop, i currently have Webroot Spy Sweeper, McAfee Security center and i'm planning on installing Trend Micro PC-Chillin Antivirus. I've installed them before without problems, but i'm just making sure they "play well" together. It is true that alot of Antivirus programs do not "playwell" together but I had Norton Antivirus and AVG running on my system at the same time with no problems. I would also recommend Ad-Aware, Spybot Search %26 Destory.

no only use one at a time . running more than one will trigger false positives and render them ineffective . I have used avg exclusivly for about 3 years and have never been infected on any of my 3 computers. So i find it quite sufficient . Just be smart about what and from where you are downloading stuff. Dont get over paranoid about it , running to much crap will just use system resources and slow down your computer.
Always use only 1 anti-virus. Conflicts will arise if you use 2 or more and leave you with less protection, not more!

DON'T DO IT, its just that simple, never use more than one virus program, and get rid of that AOL thing, AOL would never block thier own spyware, nor would they tell you they are doing it.

When I try to star a question, the "Opps you must have javascript enable to do this" message pops up. Also the controls on my question pages that you use to add details, delete your question, extend answering time etc don't work.

Need something small and wireless that can transmit back to my computer if possible, without spending TONS of money. Why is my McAfee Security Center always asking me to verify my suscription?

My subscription is current until September. Sometimes when I log into my desktop McAfee will tell me that I need to verify. If I choose not to, it will not run one or more portions of the center. It does this about 2-3 times per month and can do it multiple times in one day if I shut the computer down and come back to it later in the day.

Not enough information. What model of Belkin are you talking about? Regardless of whether your Belkin is secure, I wouldn't recommend anything but putting a password on your computer as well as making a regular user account for daily login use. Don't use the administrator account for nearly anything except troubleshooting problems, updating software, and installing new software.

I'm looking for something that's less than $150, that will monitor my back yard, ideally something wireless. I would like something that can stream to a computer, so wireless b/g is needed. Also, I would prefer something that was able to take decent images at dusk, because one of the concerns I have are deer eating at my garden. It's really horrible that people are so interested in trashing your software that they can't take the time to assist you with your actual problem and question...

I do not know what you are seeing that is telling you to change the ports on your firewall... but you need to take a look at that or have a reliable and qualified technician do so.. as it doesn't sound right. There is no special port you need to get onto yahoo answers. The port for html in general is port 80 so if you are on one page, you are on the others.

I would first and foremost make sure that your Norton suite is working properly on that computer.. make sure it is configured properly (like try setting the firewall back to defaults) and force a manual update on it to see if the update are current.

I have a Honda Civic and some thief keeps breaking into it to take my spare change (doesn't touch my stereo strangely). My car has an alarm system and it went off again this morning again. I found the passenger door ajar with no damage so I have reason to believe he has one of those door unlockers that the AAA guys have. The last time my car was broken into the thief had popped my hood and disconnected the battery (which disabled the alarm) and then got through the door.

I live in an apartment and my car is on the driveway. I can see my car out my window (if I wake up to the alarm) and it's well lit enough. So the question is, if I wanted to install a camera that looked out the window and records to the computer, what is the cheapest solution? I want to have evidence. You have more options than you might think! First and cheapest would be if you already have a digital camera of medium to high quality, such as takes pictures of 3.0 or higher megapixels and has a good clear zoom feature. If so you can hook that up to monitor your car while you sleep. The only problems I see with this are the distance to the car and the size of your computer hard drive. If the car is too far away or you don't want to take up your hard drive recording, you can get a variety of cameras form the local walmart that hunters use to watch game trails and are motion/heat activated these cameras will cost between $100 and $800 depending on the quality. it must not have uninstalled all the way...you still have something running at startup. Check the web and see if there is an uninstall program for that application. I know Norton has an uninstall program that you can download and run if going through Add/Remove programs doesn't work.

Try:

Goto the Services Tab..see fi anything for the program is listed

Do the same in the Startup Tab..Click Apply and restart

They shouldn't show back up in your taskbar

But the fact that the program is still in the taskbar means it (or part of it) is still installed on your computer..check add/remove programs Start-%26gt;Control Panel-%26gt;Add/Remove Programs and make sure it is not listed in there

Check C:%26gt;Program Files and see if a folder is still listed for the program..and delete it if there is.

I want home automation and security?

I have an old brinks bhs-4000a system in my house and I was think of taking that out and put a system in where i can hook up all the door/window/PIRS/smokes/ etc. up and then hook up relays to lights, A/C, mag locks, dorr latches and other devices to turn on and off. I would also like to get a mic and speaker to do 2 way and ptz cameras and record temperature or if there is flooding (inputs that are digital for sure but analog would be nice but analog is NOT a must). I want a system that can hook up to my computer or the network/internet so I can control devices via the web and get text messages (or emails about troubles and alarms) and have many zones like 40 to 100.

What would be the best way to do this? What brands and products would work best? Cheaper the better but I do under stand that I may have to pay $$$ to get what I want. I'm an experienced electrician and just started in the electronics systems industry. I can program about anything (may take me some time but I'm a fast learner and can figure out about anything (with some help of people I know))

You probably have to accept cookies.

Click on the word Tools, which is contained in your top tool bar area.

This will pull down a menu for you to now click on Internet Options.

Then click on the Privacy tab located at the top of the options windows.

Then click on the Advanced tab to bring up the Advanced Privacy Settings windows.

This is the area where you can define how Cookies are handled on your system etc.

It is hard to believe that just installing a software program will prevent a computer from turning on. Hardware changes have the capability to do it.

Is the computer not turning on at all? or it is not booting into windows?

If it's the prior, then probably something has broken physically and you should consider visiting a service center or computer expert to get it working.

If it is the latter, then you can press F8 at the startup windows logo to get more options to start Windows in Safe mode and then you can uninstall the program or choose to restore the system (assuming you have Windows XP) from Start --%26gt; Programs --%26gt; Accessories --%26gt; System Tools --%26gt; System Restore.

I used this program @ www.superantispyware.com (free) specifically to get rid of this horrible trojan I got on my computer, and it got rid of that and alot more stuff. Ever since I ran it my computer has been going at the speed it was when I first bought it. It might do the same for yours.

You should also use Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer.

Also, you should try to manually fix your registry (but be careful). Make sure you are on the Admin Account for your computer. Go to Start --%26gt; Run . Type in: msconfig . Press OK. A window should show up, click on the startup tab on the far right. Uncheck only the things that you don't use at all or rarely use (specifically programs). Don't do anything to the files that you have no idea are. This will control what starts up when your computer first loads, and it might run faster.

As answered in the previous post, Apple software doesn't mean it can only be for an Apple Computer. AIM, iTunes, Quicktime,and AOL Explorer Browser are just some examples of Apple software that is utilized on Apple and your Standard Windows based PC. I too have updates from my Apple Software Update program, even though i don't use those programs often, at least i know their safe to use.

Remember that updated versions have been updated for a reason and most of the time it's due to security vulnerabilities.

You are most definitely incorrect. You do not get a worm/virus/trojan horse by letting your firewall down. A firewall blocks inbound/outbound data on specific ports. But someone CANNOT infect a computer just because a port is open. If that was the case, then everyone online would get virii/worms all the time. In order to browse the internet, you have to allow inbound and outbound connections on TCP/IP port 80, which is the standard HTTP port.

Either way, someone can send a command/several commands on ANY open port and cause a buffer overflow in a firewall and shut it down, sometimes without the "victim's" knowledge.

If it started doing this after your Norton updated, I suggest you go into the Norton options and configuration and check to see if there is such a thing as internet window opening up one at a time only.

maybe you should try avant browser, Great for multiple windows. Created for that purpose.
Open the "folder options" control panel. Go to the "general" tab. The option is in the middle.

BTW: I assume you are on a PC. On a Mac there is also an option somewhere but I have forgotten.
