The tech deleted some programs and added other security software. I have called this to his attention, but he has not responded with an answer I can accept. It is also slower than it should be when opening some of my programs. I have DSL hookup so it should be much swifter...

Keep in mind your computer needs memory to operate efficiently. Now for example, when you first bought your computer it didn't have too many programs loaded on it, over time you add programs that create startup items (programs that load when the desktop loads) and this increased the time it takes for the computer to load your desktop. Now when your tech came out and installed anti virus software on the computer, this added another program to load at startup, thus increasing the time for the desktop to load. Best thing to do is upgrade your memory (RAM). RAM isn't to expensive and will definately speed up your computing.

If u had viruses that needed a tech to clean em, you might as well reload windows. Even when clean, it leaves the registry so whacked out, it's not even worth trying to fix
Did you run your maintanence and defrag. Try all the basic stuff and see if that helps. If it is a newer computer then go do system restore.

Couple of reasons why its slow
Virus/spyware infection is not completely cured
Update video driver. Uninstall and re-install it. Make sure you get the correct driver.

What is the name?
Look under task manager
Do you see any programs using a lot of CPU or memory?
You should go on your slow dsl and google: Free AVG software download.and download that. it might tack longer but it will be worth it.
